Interview with Tamara De Souza Tillery~ Make-up Artist

Embark on Fun chose to interview Tamara De Souza Tillery after seeing her work form a recent fashion event. Embark on Fun did this interview with great excitement and pride!

Why did you choose this profession?

I have always had a knack for makeup. I’ve been drawn to it in many forms. From being young and playing with my mom or sisters makeup to doing Halloween makeup and Theatre makeup in High School. It’s always been something that I have had a passion for and that made me happy.

What are the biggest challenge makeup artists have to face?

Unfortunately, now a days everyone can say they are a makeup artist. So, for someone who is truly perusing this path as a career because of passion and desire, they must demonstrate what makes them a value.

How long have you been in business ?

Prior to 2016 I lived right outside of Washington, D.C. and did makeup as a pass time for friends and family. When I moved out to Minneapolis in 2016, I began pursuing my passion as a professional career.

What is it that sets you at a different bar than other artists?

If you do the same trendy look that every Tom, Dick, and Harry can do then you aren’t an artist. If you don’t take your path seriously and engulf yourself in the pursuit of education to continuously advance your skills, then this is just a hobby. As a true makeup artist, you are continuously chasing a dream and you must be tough enough to handle the obstacles, nay-sayers and wannabe’s that come with that chase.

What If a customer asks for a style that you are sure would not suit them, how do you convince the customer to go otherwise?

Sometimes it’s hard to do that. The best bet is to get to know your client and what they are normally comfortable wearing. Does the look they are requesting match that? If not, sometimes the best thing is to complete a trial so that they can see what they have requested. Ultimately, at the end of the day, my job is to deliver a phenomenal application based on my client’s request. That is what I will do at every opportunity.

Tell me about your experience as a makeup artist?

My experience as a makeup artist has been an amazing roller coaster. I’ve had some downs, but I have had some major ups! Regardless, it has been the most amazing thing I have been involved in ever. I’m blessed to be able to say that I get to do what I love as my job.

Do you apply makeup for special events?

I do! I’ve been able to do a spectrum of different special events.

How do you prepare dry and oily skin for foundation makeup application?

Dry skin needs moisture and Oily skin needs to be diffused. There are a bunch of options to help with both cases. I always have multiple options to help different skin types. Prepping the skin prior to foundation is necessary regardless. However, I can’t give away all my secrets or I’d be out of a job!

Can you give our readers some directions with pictures about how best to apply your eye shadow?

Eye shadow application is different for everyone. It isn’t the same across the board as everyone has different eye shapes. Researching your eye shape is the best place to start!

Name some events you have covered?

I’ve covered special events from photo shoots to fashion shows. I’ve worked with MCTC, The Wedding Fair of MN and will be working with the University of Minnesota towards the end of this year and the beginning of next year. Honestly, it has all been through Faces, ETC of MN. Which is the schools I got my certificate from. I’ve been lucky enough to also say, as of this year, that I’m an instructor there as well.

How do you determine a client’s undertone before you decide what makeup technique to use?

People are either Warm or Cool. There is a range in both of those. I was taught to check the wrist vein.

What makeup products do you feel are the best products to use?

There are so many different products out on the market and to call one or the other the best is difficult for me. Everyone has different skin types, tones, and pigmentations. Different products work for different things. I pride myself in using products that will deliver exceptional pigment in HD, and therefore look amazing in photos, video and face to face.

Do you feel there are different make up products you should focus on as you get older?

It just depends on how your skin develops as you age. Some men and women age amazingly and don’t have to change what products they use.

Tell me more about what you do. If someone wants there make up done by you what are the steps they would have to take?

I enjoy every moment of being a makeup and hair artist. I pride myself in continuing to learn and to master my skills. I’m a makeup and hair artist and my passion displays in every aspect of that title and what I do.   You can see some of my work on my social media and website.
